Every year it seems more and more writers seem to think they're going to find a toe-hold in this wicked satire game. I say wicked because, as a highly successful failure myself, I can tell you just about everything you might want to know about being successful, being a failure, and even being a successful failure. But every now and again there comes a site that actually beats expectations and does something so refreshing it deserves mention.
MontanaWithKids.com has taken this age old desire to make news somehow less than real or more than mundane and twist it into something truly entertaining… and I must say, they've done it with an uncommon degree of success.
First of all, most of the articles that appear on the site are real and perfectly legitimate. There are stories about what the weather is doing, what local celebrities are up to, and what local events are going on around the state, and from there, they're mixing in a bunch of really great comically structured review articles.
Because the site is, both in name and spirit, Montana With Kids, they have a certain dedication to writing from that perspective. As such, they're doing at least a bit right, because many of the articles are written as if from the perspective of the children who have seen the latest, greatest and most interesting tourist, travel and generally interesting attractions.
The articles have a certain pseudo news flavor about them, but the facts are verifiable and the truths are absolute, so this really defines itself as a true middle ground lying somewhere between reality and artificiality.
The stories are interesting, humorous and yet still perfectly informative, assuming you have the capacity to read between the lines to perhaps the 3rd or 4th grade level.
If you're an aspiring satire writer, editor or webmaster, my only best suggestion is that you find a publication that will afford you the luxury of expressing yourself as freely and ably as you're able, no matter how outlandish your vision may be. For that matter, you can submit your article to our site, because we're pretty short on articles these days, but you need to clearly express your vision and make sure the editor really gets you, and understands what you're trying to do and how your vision varies from others already on the market.
And if you're a citizen of Montana, or a would-be traveler to the state of Montana, I'd say this site has the most comprehensive and insightful look at the state for parents with kids they care about.
